For most ostomates, having a stoma should have little or no effect on the ability to enjoy sex and being intimate. It is normal following surgery to feel less sexually confident and potentially fear rejection from your partner or worry that your pouch may fail in the heat of the moment. First and foremost, you should discuss these concerns with your stoma nurse as they are well qualified to address any questions or worries you may have. It’s also important to speak openly and honestly with any current or future partner so they are better able to understand and support you.

According to Tracey Virgin-Elliston, lead nurse at West Middlesex University Hospital, men typically want to know that everything is working within a couple of weeks of surgery. She advises that there is no specific right time to resume sex, it is when you are ready to try that the time will be right.
